Reid hesitated. Is she asking me out?
My partner, Jasmine, usually bowls with us, but she s
pregnant, Megan explained. We tried for some time before we
were successful, so she doesn t want to take any chances. She
rinsed out her mug and hung it on a rack near the sink.
Oh, okay. That sounds like fun. And congratulations. It had
been some time since Reid had gone out with friends. In fact,
for the past few years she d spent most of her free time with her
mother, Jimmy, and Chase. Maybe it would be good for her to get
out of the house, perhaps meet someone new to help her get her
mind off Isabel. Yeah, right.
Are you waiting for someone?
Isabel turned at the voice from behind her. She remembered
the beefy firefighter from Jimmy s funeral. Hi. Nathan, isn t it?

He braced himself a little too casually against the hood of her
car and folded his arms over a broad chest. A slow smile spread
across features that were best described as a bit pretty. High
cheekbones, a thin nose, and an elegant jawline all seemed at odds
with his thick, muscular body.
So how are you doing? Do you or Chase need anything?
He touched her shoulder lightly.

Good. Because you know, if you needed, say, a night out to
get away from the kid, I d be happy to take you to dinner.
He was good-looking, and despite the low opinion Reid
seemed to have of him, Nathan was the kind of guy that, on first

mistaking the interest in his eyes. So why do I feel absolutely
nothing when I look at him, yet the sight of Reid dirty and sweaty
has me imagining unmentionable things?
You re on Montrose, aren t you? Megan asked as they
walked outside together. We start bowling at eight. You can meet
me or I can pick you up. You re actually on my way.
That sounds good, if you re sure you don t mind.
Across the parking lot, Isabel and Nathan looked very cozy.
He angled close to her and bent his head attentively when she
spoke. Isabel smiled warmly in response to something he said.
Nathan seems to think he s a player, Megan said, further
stoking the jealousy that burned in Reid s stomach.
Yeah, he does, Reid murmured.
Call me if you need anything, Nathan was saying as they
approached. Captain. He offered a mock salute in her direction
before he glanced at Megan. Edge, see you around.
Reid tried not to glare as he sauntered away, but she was
afraid she had a murderous look on her face. She was itching to
commit murder, that was certain.
Ready? Isabel asked.
Yeah. Reid tossed her backpack into the rear seat.
I don t think we ve met, I m Megan Edge. Megan held out
her hand.
I m sorry, Reid interjected, realizing she was distracted by
Nathan and hadn t introduced the two women. Isabel, Megan s
on our crew now. Megan, this is Isabel Grant, Jimmy s sister.
It s nice to meet you, Isabel responded politely, grasping
